Toujours Marcel: a small itinerant pièce that loops like a ritual within a broader show. This is Jasmine Trinca’s first movie. Within suburban backyards, a mother (played by Alba Rohrwacher) only has eyes for her dog, Marcel – the only character of whom we know the name. Besides them, there’s a daughter who desperately seeks the attentiont of the woman who brought her into the world. This atypical blossoming of the maternal and familiar – already explored by the directori in her Being My Mom – everyone wears an invisible mask, trying to play the natural role that a weird faith have assigned to them. Female figures are the substance of this movie, which is filled with Morantean echoes and proceeds through short chapters corresponding to I Ching’s hexagrams. Each represented woman looks like trapped in bubble where no one else can get into, and this makes the plot unpredictable and out of control, while it depicts the shades of love, between absence and resignation. This void composed of missing figures and useless acts of rebellion can be filled only by Art, the only one to which “life’s owed”: Marcel! is thus an undefinable tale full of emotion, adventure, and imagination.
