Princess is a Nigerian sex worker and the wood next to the motorway is her kingdom, which she fiercely defends from competitor girls. She’s nineteen, she has a colored wig for each mood and a name for each customer. Like girls of her age, she dreams a bright future and a love that could take her away from the edge she lives in. Princess’ resilient and obstinate vitality animates Roberto De Paolis’ second movie, which is unexpectedly eager of going beyond reality and having a look at it through an adolescent sight. Through the degradation of sex working and the fractious sisterhood bounding the protagonists – who are not, for the majority, professional actresses and have lived on their own skin the sorrow of human-trade – the movie (competing in the section Orizzonti of the 79th Mostra del Cinema di Venezia) is a gentle coming of age that reports a struggling social condition with a fair balance between realism and humor.
