BELLARIA FILM FESTIVAL | FOURTH EDITIONAt the 40th Bellaria Film Festival, contemporary independent cinema is the winner

The innovations desired by the new director Daniela Persico have met with public approval: the number of spectators quadrupled compared to past editions.

The 40th edition of the Bellaria Film Festival (BFF) ended on Sunday 15 May 2022, with audience attendance quadrupled compared to previous editions.

Re Granchio by Matteo Zoppis and Alessio Rigo de Righi won the Casa Rossa Prize, awarded by a jury of 15 young people from all over Italy, and the prizes of the Gabbiano Competition, with the following motivation:

For the ability to refound an imaginary that has its roots in a local culture, projecting it into an unexplored territory between legend and folklore. A work with an international scope, a journey beyond the boundaries of the world, reality and genre that reveals an unexpected treasure in the panorama of contemporary Italian cinema.”

For the Gabbiano Competition, the jury, composed of Lucia Mascino (Jury President), programmer Mathilde Henrot (Locarno Film Festival), directors Massimo D’Anolfi and Martina Parenti (Spira Mirabilis), awarded the Best Film Award to Quello che conta by Agnese Giovanardi: “for the truthfulness and sincerity of the storytelling, for the honesty and empathy of the proposed look, and for the generosity and strength of the main character”

The Prize for Cinematic Innovation to Spartivento by Marco Piccarreda
“a touching film that recounts a delicate and exceptional bond through the power of the unspoken and the unseen.”

The jury also chose to give a special mention to Enklave by Marco Balestri “for the director’s ability to stage the present and the past of a place in an original way.”

The MYmovies.it Award, ex-aequo, goes to Una claustrocinefilia by Alessandro Aniballi and Quello che conta by Agnese Giovanardi.

The Oxilia 10 Award, presented by Paola Corti and Monica Naldi of Cinema Beltrade, goes to two films, Appendice ad un film girato in estate by Samira Guadagnuolo and Tiziano Doria
and L’Ors by Alessandro Abba Legnazzi.

All the films that participated in the Gabbiano competition are available for streaming on the MYmovies ONE platform until 22 May.

The changes wanted by the new director Daniela Persico have met with favour with the public, thanks to the preview screenings, meetings and masterclasses with some of the major contemporary independent authors such as Carla Simon (Golden Bear at the last Berlin Film Festival), Laura Samani (David 2022 Award as Best Debut Director) and Yuri Ankarani (Best Documentary Candidate at the David 2022 Awards) who have put cinema tout court at the centre of the historic festival.

Says Daniela Persico, “Over these four days, Bellaria has been filled with film enthusiasts and professionals, once again becoming a place of exchange and sharing for young Italian cinema. I am grateful for the town’s warm response and the generosity of all the authors and producers who made this edition possible thanks to their beautiful films, often born with difficulty and always in search of greater visibility. We hope this is only the beginning of a beautiful adventure!”
