THE ARCHIVE FOR INDEPENDENT ITALIAN CINEMA

The Archive for Independent Italian Cinema is ready to spread the fragments of a collective and independent film history around the world. The archive was officially founded in 1990, but was already conceived in the late 1980s, when the Bellaria Film Festival (until 2005 known as Anteprima per il cinema indipendente italiano) was directed by Morando Morandini, Enrico Ghezzi and Gianni Volpi. And now it is more real and tangible, albeit digital.

The archive project takes shape through digitisation, cataloguing and the creation of an open source and participative online platform. Here, users will not only be able to consult the materials, but also create their own profile, comment on the films, add information, mark keywords in individual frames, create customised lists, share posts – in short, take care of the archive and contribute to its cultural, open and ongoing mission. The archive will also have its own wiki.

More than 5,000 titles have been digitised, an intensive process supervised by Alessandro Gagliardo, thanks to which the Archive will be able to return to the world the films selected and the films not selected in past editions of BFF: the early works of Luca Guadagnino and Michelangelo Frammartino, the first shorts by Giorgio Diritti, Costanza Quatriglio, Francesco Costabile, Giacomo Abruzzese or Simone Massi and Susanna Nicchiarelli. And also the works of Daniele Gaglianone, Flavia Mastrella, Alina Marazzi, Agostino Ferrente, Corso Salani and Antonio Rezza. Not to mention paper and digital documents, photographs and images.

The archive is promoted by the Municipality of Bellaria Igea Marina and Approdi srl with the support of the Ministero della Cultura and was presented on 20 March during a press conference held in the Sala della Crociera of the MIC, in the presence of the Undersecretary for Culture Lucia Borgonzoni, the Mayor of Bellaria Igea Marina and president of the Archive Filippo Giorgetti, and Sergio Canneto, Approdi’s administrator.

The archive platform was realised thanks to the collaboration with Circolo Cinematografico Linea d’Ombra, through the Next Generation EU funds earmarked for the PNRR. Partners also include Hera, Romagna Acque and 4/Terzi APS.

The Archive is, for the time being, only accessible by invitation. You can, however, have a look at the site:
